Texas taxpayers will now pay for hormone treatment of LBGT inmates.

Under the terms of a newly announced policy, Texas taxpayers will now foot the bill for hormone treatment of LBGT inmates. Has the Texas Department of Criminal Justice crossed a line?

Their policy previously stated that a prisoner was financially responsible for their own “intersex conditions treatment” associated with “gender dysphoria” if the inmate had begun such treatment before they entered the correctional system. With the recent policy change, not only is the financial burden now on the taxpayer, but inmates can begin treatment at any time while incarcerated.

Americans across the country suffer from depression based on their cosmetic appearance. For example, many suffer from facial acne. However, it’s a luxury to see a Dermatologist and if you can’t afford to pay for it you come up with other ways to solve the problem. While treatment of facial acne and hormone therapy clearly differ in severity, they’re both considered a cosmetic treatment and are by no means necessary. So why are law-abiding citizens required to foot the bill?

This appears to be yet another politically-motivated agenda being forced upon unassuming Texas taxpayers.

The Texas Observer, reported that “The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) has quietly made it easier for transgender prisoners to access hormone therapy and other medically necessary health care.”

The broader issue of societal tolerance regarding those in the LBGT community is a separate issue. People are free to make changes to their own body. It’s a personal freedom that is constitutionally protected. However, the citizens of Texas shouldn’t pickup the tab for cosmetic changes, especially the tabs of convicted criminals to whom they already provide shelter, food, and other services.

In an interview with Breitbart Texas, Texas State Representative Debbie Riddle (R-Tomball) stated, “Taxpayers are the folks getting taken to the cleaners and they are sick of the stupid stuff. This gender identity confusion is over the top. One group that is not confused is the hardworking taxpaying citizens that are trying to just pay their bills, rear their families, and put food on the table. The whole thing makes me furious.”
